ACR I-Card: How to Get and Renew Your Alien Certificate of Registration

July 25, 2025

Foreign nationals staying in the Philippines for long-term purposes (whether for work, study, investment, or retirement) are required to register with the Bureau of Immigration (BI). One of the most important documents they must obtain is the Alien Certificate of Registration Identity Card, more commonly known as the ACR I-Card. We’ll explain what the card is, who needs it, the requirements, and how to get one.

What is an ACR I-Card?

The ACR I-Card is a microchip-based identification card issued by the Philippine Bureau of Immigration to registered foreign nationals residing in the country for more than 59 days. It serves as proof of registration and contains personal and biometric information such as your name, photograph, fingerprint, visa type, and duration of stay.

This card replaces the old paper-based Alien Certificate of Registration and makes it easier for foreign nationals to access government services, apply for permits, or travel in and out of the country.

The ACR I-Card is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. In some cases, its validity is tied to the type of visa held by the foreign national.

Who Needs an ACR I-Card?

The ACR I-Card is required for all foreign nationals who intend to stay in the Philippines for more than 59 days, regardless of their visa category. This includes:

  • Holders of Non-Immigrant Visas, such as the 9(g) Pre-arranged Employment Visa, 9(f) Student Visa, or Special Non-Immigrant Visas (e.g., PEZA, EO 226, etc.)
  • Holders of Immigrant Visas, such as the 13(a) or 13(g)
  • Special Resident Retirees under the SRRV visa program
  • Registered aliens who need to renew their ACR
  • Foreigners with permanent resident status

Failure to secure an ACR I-Card when required can lead to penalties, delays in visa processing, or issues with immigration authorities during travel.

What are the Requirements to Get an ACR I-Card?

To apply for an ACR I-Card, you will typically need to prepare the following:

  1. Letter request addressed to the Commissioner through the Chief of the Alien Registration Division stating the purpose for the application
  2. Accomplished application form (BI Form 2014-08-006 Rev 0)
  3. Photocopy of passport bio-page and passport pages bearing the visa implementation page and latest admission with authorized stay
  4. Photocopy of Identification (ID) card from the concerned agency (i.e., PRA, BOI, PEZA, CEZA, etc.), if applicable
  5. Photocopy of Marriage Certificate or Birth Certificate (For Balikbayan admissions)

How Do I Apply for an ACR I-Card?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you apply for your ACR I-Card in the Philippines:

  1. Secure a visa or extension: Before applying for an ACR I-Card, you must first obtain or extend a visa that qualifies you for long-term stay, such as a work or retirement visa.
  2. Go to the Bureau of Immigration: Submit your application at the BI Main Office in Intramuros, Manila, or at any authorized BI field office. Currently, ACR I-Cards must be applied for in person.
  3. Submit all requirements: Make sure all documents are complete. You may be asked to undergo biometric capturing (photo, fingerprint scan) during your visit.
  4. Pay the necessary fees: Fees for the ACR I-Card vary depending on visa type, but usually around a few thousand pesos. Remember to submit a copy of the Official receipt to the Bureau of Immigration.
  5. Wait for release: Processing time is usually 1 to 2 weeks. You’ll be notified when your card is ready for pickup.

Renewing an ACR I-Card

ACR I-Cards are generally valid for one year and must be renewed annually. To renew, the cardholder must appear in person at the Bureau of Immigration and bring the following.

  1. Accomplished application form (BI Form 2014-08-010 Rev 0);
  2. Original ACR I-Card (to be surrendered); and
  3. Photocopy of passport bio-page, visa implementation page, and latest admission with valid authorized stay.
  4. Additional documents, depending on your visa type

Renewal is similar to the initial application process but is typically more streamlined. It’s important to renew before the card expires to avoid penalties or issues with visa status.
